we realize that due to the pictures we have as the description of the board, some people may get confused. so we arranged a handy dandy background guide to each board.
SIREN-BISHOP HALL ARTS CENTER- The center provides superb facilities with instruction in many areas of the fine arts: architecture, ceramics, drawing, painging, photography, printmaking, sculpture, and dancing.
CLASSES-there are five buildings devoted to main classes. SBH offers more than 450 courses in 20 subject areas. There is the science building, math building, english buildings, history building, and the language building. Each building contains classrooms and portraits of past principles, trustees, and notable teachers and alumni/ae. There are also lecture rooms for special programs, speakers, and events.
ASTRONOMY OBSERVATORY- One of the newest features to the school added in 1989 serves as a place where students can study astronomy. It is the top layer of the science building. Classes are usually held at night, but on days where there are not classes, a select few are allowed to go up there on their own to study the stars. It is the most quiet place on campus.
ATHLETIC FACILITIES- The athletic facilities include gymnasiums, squash center, two indoor pools, two indoor hockey rinks, a basketball court, cycling room, a weight room, a stadium, boathouse, softball field, tennis courts, track, an indoor rock climbing wall and 19 other fields. All the facilities are state of the art, because you should expect no less.
ANDOVER CHAPEL- The beautiful sanctuary of the Andover Chapel provides an elegant venue for a variety of activities including the weekly all-school meetings, concerts, guest speakers, and other special events.
COMMONS- The commons is the dining facility for the entire community. It was built in 1892 after the first Dining Hall burnt down. It underwent renovations in the summer of 2007. The commons serves three delicious meals a day, and offers a salad and sandwich bar in addition to regular entrees. Limited dining is available throughout the day, which is great for quick snacks between classes. It also features a renovated student lounge and a new outdoor terrace. Unlike some other schools, the food at SBH is to die for.
THE QUAD- This is where students hang out in between classes and in the mornings. It's one of the prettiest places on campus with tons of flowers and grass manicured daily. Students love to sit and do work under the shaded trees. You're likely to see a few girls tanning even though it's against the rules.
THE GRILLE- this place serves the best food on campus, besides the commons. they're open all hours of the day until three am. they serve coffee, burgers, fries, milkshakes, donuts, candy, etc. you can find the greasy unhealthy stuff here.
THE KENNEDY LIBRARY- did you know that the entire kennedy family has attended SBH since it's founding? while john was running for president, in order to show his support for education, he donated a billion dollars to SBH for a new library to be built. it holds almost as many books as the library of congress. the stacks are a great place for a hook up.
FOREST- lining the school grounds, don't get lost! a popular place for students to throw secret parties, smoke a cigarette, and do illegal stuff. careful though, it can get rather...scary.
CONSERVATORY- this is the greenhouse. it is student run by the herbology classes. some of the rarest plants in the world are grown here. there is also an organic garden being grown that provides the commons with fresh, delicious vegetables.
DORMITORIES- the dormitories at SBH are far nicer than the dormitories at colleges. they are spacious and are either singles or doubles. the mattresses are comfortable and students are provided wooden desks, wooden boodshelves, wooden dressers, and closets. some dorms have communal bathrooms and the newer ones typically have build in bathrooms in each room. from many dorm windows, students either have views of the forest, the light house, or the coast.
INLAND CBGB- You remember how the world's best night club closed in 2006 in new york city? well here is a little secret, the creators founded a cbgb her on rowe island first, to test it out on the privileged teenagers at SBH(aka their goal clientele). well this club didn't close in 2006, it is still here. for a while, a lot of hardcore rock bands toured at this unknown spot, yet today it's become your standard night club. they card though, so make sure you have your fake id!
THE LOBSTER POT- Did you forget that you were in Maine? Maine is known for it's lobster. this restaurant is ages old, as are most of the stores on rowe island. it has the best food.
VERA'S- for those of you that are in dire need of fifth avenue, here is your home away from home. vera's carries all the hottest brands, but be careful it is very pricey. make sure you brought your daddy's credit card.
BRECKENRIDGE PUB- alcohol is a must have, and john, the ancient bar tender doesn't card. there's a bunch of saw dust on the floor, but other than that, he carries the best beer in all of maine. some of the whiskey is as old as the actual place(one hundred fifty years!)
INSOMNIAC'S NOVELS- this is one of those stores that you can sit in for hours upon hours and never get kicked out. the pages are golden and there are over four floors stacked to the brim with books. sit down in a big chair and open up a book. ah! don't you love the smell of old paper?
AVERY'S OLD-FASHIONED SODA SHOP- the name of this place doesn't lie, it's practically a rowe island landmark. it serves up the best milkshakes, cheesburgers, and fries on the entire east coast.
WATER FRONT THE COASTLINE the coast actually travels all the way down to the edge of campus. you can view the coastline from your dorm room. the rocks are sharp and ages ago when people still sailed, there were dozens of ship wrecks. while this is not a beach, feel free to strip and dive into the cold, clear maine water. it's beautiful at night.
LIGHTHOUSE- do you remember that ghost story? oh i suppose i'll tell it to you again. as it goes, the light house keeper had a wife that loved to sing and play the piano. at night, she would play loudly, hoping that her song would lead the sailor's to shore. doesn't it remind you of that greek myth-the tale of the sirens and their song? anyways, one night, sailors at sea saw the light from the light house and heard her song, they were drawn to rowe island and then they hit the coast, the rocky jagged coast that they had not expected. their ship began to sink, and soon, there was nothing left. no one heard of the sailors ever again. yet one day, this happened dozens of times, and one night, the keeper stayed up and listened to his wife play. he saw the ship crash and heard the frantic cries from his place at the top of the tower. as he saw them drowning, he could not do a thing. by the time he got there, they were at the bottom of the ocean. when he got back to the light house, he was furious at his wife for luring them to the shore. he took a knife, and he stabbed her thrice. he then disappeared, no one has heard from him since. if you listen closely, you can still hear the piano from the top of the light house. no one has gone up there in years. it is located right outside the campus, so students have easy access to it if they dare.
LOCAL MARINA- many students rent boats during the year, they are housed here. some people even bring their yachts. you can rent a boat for the day and take it fishing.
CHANNELSIDE BED AND BREAKFAST- this was primarily created for the sake of the parents when the visit. the service is impeccable, the food is delicious, and the rooms are spacious and beautiful. it is located directly at the coast line and you get an ocean view from your window.
