I KNEW that fucking Johnston in English was going to fail me. I wonder when these grades will be sent home. Dad is going to throw his usual fit, and Mum's way too blasé to feel ashamed anymore. I hope they don't put a limit on the checking account like they did last time and I couldn't pay for a damn glass of wine for this nice girl I was seeing. Fuck having Rhodes Scholar parents and a drug addict brother: I automatically become the manifestation of all their hopes. I'll be bloody brilliant in the future, all right. I'm going to eclipse both Lloyd Wright and Gehry and build monuments greater than Guggenheim and Falling Waters combined. Yeah.

In all honesty, though, my old man's done good for himself, working his way up from a farmhand to the Ambassador of the UK to Spain. He's a dictionary-definition Renaissance man: speaks four languages, did crew in uni, and has friends in places. At Cambridge he met Mum, a Spanish exchange student and daughter of a stupendously wealthy shipping magnate. The courtship was all very tempestuous, according to my permanently slightly-drunk uncle. Twenty years later, they've unconsciously (or with silent resignation) settled into the doldrums of work and marriage in their late forties.

My brother James is a sore loser, and the family likes to deny his existence occasionally. He started to do heroin around 2002 when everyone's already switched to ecstasy. Apparently, his first girlfriend broke up with him for an elephant trainer in a gypsy circus. You can't go lower than that.
